The case is led by Dr. Fu Jingying from the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research,Chinese Academy of Sciences, and launched by a team jointly composed of Jilin University,Nanjing Agricultural College,Panshi City Agriculture and Rural Affairs Bureau,Lanjia Rice Planting Cooperative in Panshi City,Beijing Tianhang Huachuang Technology Co.,Ltd. The case has been listed as a case of the "Geographical Indications Environment & Sustainability " (Case 3).

Since the Qing government lifted the ban on Changbai Mountain in the mid-19th century, rice cultivation has expanded to Lanjia Village in Panshi. Lanjia Village is located in the southern part of Niuxin Town in Panshi, on the bank of Huifa River, with Lanjia Reservoir as the irrigation water source. The rice planting variety in Lanjia Village is Jida Japonica Rice 518 developed by Jilin University, which belongs to the mid late maturing small grain fragrant variety. The plant height is about 109 cm and the thousand grain weight is 23.2 g. At present, the rice planting area in the entire village is 61 hectares, and the yield per hectare can reach 7000-7500 kilograms. Lanjia Village registered its trademark for rice in January 2021.

Lanjia Village is located in the transition zone from the Changbai Mountains to Songnen Plain, which is a hilly and semi mountainous area. The annual precipitation is 699.6 mm, the annual average temperature is 4.6 ℃, and the annual accumulated temperature is 2700 – 2850 ℃. The rice growing season is from May to October, with an average annual temperature of 15.3 ℃ and a daily sunshine duration of 7.37 hours during the planting month. The organic matter content in the cultivated soil layer of black soil is high, with a carbon content of 2.7-3.2% and a carbon nitrogen ratio of 8.6-10.7. Lanjia Village is a traditional agricultural village, and the 25 elements and ion indicators tested for irrigation water quality are superior to the hygiene standards for urban water supply and drinking water.

Lanjia Rice Planting Cooperative was established in March 2021, transforming the original village household operation mode into a collective operation mode, and managing the planting, production, processing, and sales of products according to organic rice standards. At the same time, regular guidance and training on production technology and field management techniques will be conducted.

The test results of rice products show that the main indicators of Jida Jingdao 518 have reached the national first-class high-quality rice standard, with a brown rice rate of 84.2%, a polished rice rate of 77%, a length to width ratio of 1.6, a grain length of 4.5 mm, a chalky grain rate of 6%, a chalkiness degree of 1.5%, a gel consistency of 81mm, a amylose content of 15.42%, and a protein content of 6.65%.

Under the guidance of experts from the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Jilin University, and the leadership of the government, the collective economy of Lanjia Village has significantly improved. The rural roads have been repaired and opened to traffic. The collective income of the village has increased from 0 yuan in 2020 to 100000 yuan in 2021, and the living standards of the villagers have been improved.

Lanjia Village has established an automatic observation station for rice habitats, which can record and display more than 10 parameters such as air quality, temperature, and precipitation. The international registration of this case, the registration of the China Science and Technology Resource Sharing System, and the monitoring and traceability system of the rice habitat in Lanjia Village have all been registered in accordance with national standards.

"Geographical Indications Environment & Sustainability " is led by the Chinese Geographical Society, incorporated into the action plan of the " Innovation China" professional science and technology service team of the China Association for Science and Technology. Its purpose is to integrate basic sciences such as geography, resources, and ecology, as well as information and communication technologies such as geographic information systems, remote sensing and Earth observation, big data and the Internet of Things, with open science as the basic principle, to protect geographical indications, to promote rural revitalization and regional sustainable development.
