DOI:10.3974/geodc.2021.12.06,CSTR:20146.22.2021.12.06,GCdataPR [2021]06

The case is led by Professer Chen Shengbo from Jilin University, and launched by a team jointly composed of Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research of Chinese Academy of Sciences,Pomology Research Institute of Jilin Academy of Agricultural Sciences,Agriculture and Rural Bureau of Panshi City,Baoshan Township Government,Jilin Province Panbao Agricultural Products Co.,Ltd, Beijing Tianhang Huachuang Technology Co.,Ltd. The case has been listed as a case of the "Geographical Indications Environment & Sustainability " (Case 6).

Baoshan Township is under the jurisdiction of Panshi City, Jilin Province. Chinese cherry apple is a species of apple in the Rosaceae family, also known as "Jixinguo" in the local area. There are 14 administrative villages in Baoshan Township. In the past 20 years, the number of permanent registered residence registration and permanent population in Baoshan Township has been declining. According to the fifth to seventh census data, the number of permanent registered residence registration has decreased by 26% in 20 years; The permanent population has decreased by 52% over the same period. In 2020, the number of permanent households is only 62.56% of the number of registered residence, and the permanent population is only 49.34% of the registered residence population. Creating employment opportunities has become the main challenge for rural revitalization in Baoshan Township.

The cultivation of Chinese cherry apple in Baoshan Township began around 1960, and in 1992, Guohaishan in Baoshan became a specialized fruit tree village. The planting area of fruit trees in Baoshan Township is 650 hectares, accounting for 2.68% of the total area of Baoshan Township. There are over 430000 Chinese Cherry Apple trees, with a total output of about 30000 tons. In 2021, Baoshan established a modern agricultural industrial park for fruit products, driving 1280 households, equivalent to 22.98% of the permanent residents in Baoshan Township in 2021.

Baoshan Chinese cherry apple is distributed on the southern slope of low mountains and hills, with an altitude of 350-700m and a terrain slope of 20-25 degrees. The case area is located in a temperate monsoon climate zone, with rainy and hot seasons, an average annual temperature of 4.6 ℃, a daily temperature difference of 12.56 ℃ during the growing season, an average annual precipitation of 699.6mm, and 7.37 hours of sunshine. The soil is black soil and black calcareous soil, and the soil texture belongs to loamy soil accompanied by sand and gravel. The permeability of the soil is conducive to the growth and development of fruit trees. The soil carbon to nitrogen ratio (C/N) is 8.44 to 12.21, and all heavy metal indicators in the soil are lower than the pollution content values specified in the national standard.

Baoshan Chinese cherry apple sprouts in mid April, blooms in early May, and ripens in mid September. The tree can bear fruit in 3-4 years, and the yield can reach 75kg in 5 years. It enters the high yield period in 7-8 years. The fruit of Chinese cherry apple contains 17.22% sugar and 0.467% acid, with an edible rate of 98%.

Baoshan Township has included the cultivation, management, fruit grade classification, business management, and fresh fruit refrigeration of Chinese cherry apple in standardized management. In 2010, it was praised as the "first red fruit village in Kanto" in the survey of 100 villages in China. Chinese cherry apple products are operated and managed by Jilin Province Panbao Agricultural Products Co.,Ltd and Xinyu Fruit Tree Planting Professional Cooperative in Beiguohui Village. The high-quality development of Baoshan's embroidered crabapple products is creating employment opportunities in the local area, thereby promoting population return.

In 2021, a fully automatic ecological environment positioning observation station and traceability technology platform will be established for Chinese cherry apple Orchard. The international registration of this case, the registration of China Science and Technology Resource Sharing System, and the monitoring and traceability system of Chinese cherry apple have all been registered in accordance with national standards.

"Geographical Indications Environment & Sustainability " is led by the Chinese Geographical Society, incorporated into the action plan of the " Innovation China" professional science and technology service team of the China Association for Science and Technology. Its purpose is to integrate basic sciences such as geography, resources, and ecology, as well as information and communication technologies such as geographic information systems, remote sensing and Earth observation, big data and the Internet of Things, with open science as the basic principle, to protect geographical indications, to promote rural revitalization and regional sustainable development.
