The 2018 Remote Sensing Advanced Training Course of ESA-MOST was Held in Shenzhen, China

The Advanced Training Course of Sino-European Remote Sensing S &T Cooperation 2018 focused on ocean and coastal region was successfully held in Shenzhen University from 12–17 November, 2018 (Figure 1). The training course is one of the Dragon Programme (Phase 4), which was organized by National Remote Sensing Center of China (NRSCC) under the Ministry of Science and Technology of China (MOST) and European Space Research Institute (ESRIN) under European Space Agency (ESA), and hosted by the Architecture and Urban Planning School of Shenzhen University.

Dr. Wang, Qi’an (Director General of NRSCC), Dr. Zhang, Songmei (Deputy Director General of NRSCC), Prof. Li, Qingquan (President of Shenzhen University), Prof. Li, Zengyuan (Deputy director of the Research Institute of Forest Resources Information Techniques, Chinese Academy of Forestry, Coordinator of Dragon Programme), and Mr. Eric Doyle (Project director of ESA-ESRIN) and more than a hundred of scholars attended the event (Figure 2).
The training course with the theme of remote sensing applications focused on ocean and coastal region, mainly designed for young scientists engaged in applied research in ocean and coastal remote sensing. The main purpose of this training course is to promote the development of marine remote sensing technology and applications in China, as well as the academic exchange between China and Europe marine remote sensing research. The composition of this training course is designed according to theories and practical work by professional lecturers. The trainees learnt a series of theory lectures of Ocean Colors, Sea Surface Temperature, Climate Change, Sea Surface Salinity, etc. Combined with theory, professional lecturers also gave practice lectures to trainees of ocean data process and analysis software with earth observation data. During the training course week, the Dragon Programme committee organized one poster presentation evening and two academic social events to encourage the academic communication between young scientists. The trainees learned advanced remote sensing theory and practice knowledge from professional lecturers.
Dr. Wang, Qi’an gave a welcome speech at the opening ceremony. He expressed his expectations and wishes for the students. He hoped that all the trainees could fully take this learning opportunity, to communicate with their colleagues and lecturers, to obtain advanced knowledge of the latest ocean application and techniques from professionals. Dr. Zhang, Songmei congratulated the trainees at the closing ceremony and presented the training course certificates to each of the trainees, who completed the course. She expressed her affirmation of the trainees and the sponsors; she also thanked all the scientists of China and Europe for their contributions to the Dragon Programme (Phase 4).
The Dragon Programme is the largest international cooperation programme between MOST and ESA in the field of Earth observation, which was launched in 2004. More than 600 experts and young scientists from China and Europe jointed the Dragon Programme during the last 15 years. There were 15 advanced training courses were held supported by the Dragon Programme, more than a thousand trainees in the fields of land, atmosphere and ocean were benefited though the training courses of the Dragon Programme.
