The arrival of the era of big data has brought new opportunities to the development of geography. Geographers have begun new exploration in the field of scientific data. The publication and sharing of global change data is an innovative measure to promote the development of modern geography. In order to accelerate the data sharing for research and education, the Geographical Society of China (GSC) and the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research (IGSNRR) of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) jointly organized “Global Change Research Data Publishing & Sharing in 100 Universities", supported by the Bureau of Science Communication of CAS.

The 21st Seminar on Global Change Research Data Publishing & Sharing was held on April 12, 2019 at the College of Urban and Environmental Sciences of Liaoning Normal University, Dalian city, China. The seminar focused on the data publishing, sharing and data computing environment.

Professor Yue, Chongxing, Vice President of Liaoning Normal University, warmly welcomed the delegation to the university. He emphasized that it was an opportunity for Liaoning Normal University to reform its education and research by data driven science and education. Liaoning Normal University was established in 1951. Most teachers from middle and high school in Liaoning province were graduated from this university.

Prof. Liu, Chuang, Editor-in-Chief of Global Change Research Data Publishing & Repository, delivered a presentation on “Rising and Development of Big Data Geography”. She emphasized that the era of big data has come the big data geography will provide a rare opportunity for the modern geography, and we need to seize the opportunity to action. As the first step, the data publishing and sharing could be the initial way to go. Those, who may already have original research datasets, may publish them though the data publishing infrastructure (such as Global Change Research Publishing & Repository) and those, who may not have original research dataset, may use the datasets with the data citation though the data publishing infrastructure or international or national data centers.

Prof. He, Shujin, Associate Secretary General of Geographical Society of China, provided a speech on “Enhancing Impact of Geographic and Natural Resource Academic Journals”. He summarized the historical experiences of academic journals during the last 85 years since the Acta Geographica Sinica launched in 1934, he delivered the massage that journals in China have begun to take shape, mainly distributed in research institutes and universities of geographic resources, and their influence has been significantly enhanced. However, there are still some problems, such as separate publishing, decentralized management, lack of publishing characteristics, which do not meet the needs of the innovation and data intensive research. It is necessary to continue to expand and strengthen the functions of journal service disciplines.

Dr. Ma, Junhua, assistant professor of Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, gave a detailed report on the publishing standards of global change research data. Her report covered new mechanisms for data publishing system, including, data submission, data Intellectual property protection, data security, quality check, data repository, data citation and impact and more related issues. Firstly, Dr. Ma introduced that the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) was assigned to each of the datasets and data papers, with which, the dataset can be found and accessed. The incorporation of DOI into ISO marked the arrival of a new data sharing mechanism and era guaranteed by bottom-up and data publishing. Secondly, she took Journal of Global Change Data & Discovery as an example to illustrate how to find the solutions for the new challenges in the common issues of bilingual journals in both Chinese and English.

Professor Yang, Jun from Liaoning Normal University, gave delivered his presentation on “Methodology and Practices on Urban Climate and Human Settlements Data Analysis”. He elaborated the evolution process of artificial landscape in urban core area in the process of urbanization combined with his team’s research results, analyzed the law of functional evolution of urban fringe area and the law of comprehensive environmental effect of urbanization process, and briefly explained the simulation model of spatial-temporal differentiation of urban fringe in the process of urbanization, and further revealed the impact of urbanization on urban climate and human settlements environment. Under the background of big data, He thinks that we should take urban agglomeration as the research object and urban agglomeration climate and human settlements as the research content, reveal the law and mechanism of spatial differentiation between urban climate and human settlements under the background of urbanization, condense the application of urban data and combine machine learning technology, carry out spatial data processing, from micro perspective.

Professor Zhang, Wei, Dean of Urban and Environmental College and more than 300 teachers and students participated in the seminar. More questions and interactive discussions were taken after the presentations. The questions were focused what was the standard for the datasets peer review, how to recognize the data authors’ contribution; big data classes and education, data computing environment and infrastructure, etc.

Professor Zhang, Wei said at the closing remark of the seminar, as the leader of the college, he would try hard to speed up to have the courses and computing environment of big geographic data in the college for education, research and sustainable development.
