International Training Workshop on Open and Reuse Scientific Data in Developing Countries was successfully held from September 7-8, 2017 in University of Antananarivo, Madagascar. Led by the Committee on Data for Science and Technology, International Council of Sciences (CODATA/ICSU) Task Group of Preservation of and Open Access to S&T Data in/for/with Developing Countries (CODATA PASTD), more than 30 scholars and students from 6 universities of Madagascar joined the training workshop.
The two-day training course aims to enhance the capacity of developing countries on open access and utilization on environmental and scientific data for supporting sustainable development goals. The training program includes lectures and hands-on practice to improve the data application analysis capabilities of young scientists from different fields, with special concerns on data sharing principles, management guidelines, data publishing and data sharing, etc.
Prof. Zhou, Xiang, co-chair of CODATA PASTD and Dr. Mika Odido, Co-Chair of Capacity Building subgroup of CODATA-PASTD and IOC Sub Commission for Africa and the Adjacent Island States, UNESCO Multi-Sectoral Office in Nairobi, Kenya, provide speech at the opening and closing ceremonies. Invited speakers from China, USA, France, and Kenya presented lectures on data publishing and sharing, data sharing policies and principles, open data management, digital agriculture and remote sensing information processing, marine & coastal environment monitoring with remote sensing data, global and regional ocean data sources and networks and geographic information standard. The course was taken in French and English with support of simultaneous interpretation on site. The course was co-organized by Dr. Tao, Zui, from Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Prof. Nicolas Raft Razafindrakoto from University of Antananarivo, Madagascar.

The training workshop has achieved favorable effects with active participation. Prof. Nicolas Raft Razafindrakoto from University of Antananarivo, Ms. Ambinintsoa Lucie Noasilalaonomenjahary from Ministry of Environment, Ecology and Forests, Madagascar and Dr. Simon Hodson, Executive Director of Committee on Data for Science and Technology hope that the PASTD training course will continue in future.
The International Training workshop is an event of “International Workshop on Open Data for Sustainable Development Goals in Developing Countries”, which was held 4-6 September 2017 in Madagascar. The Antananarivo training workshop is one of a series of actions of CODATA PASTD on capacity building since it was established in 2002, The training workshop was supported by institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth, Chinese Academy of Sciences (RADI, CAS), Ministry of Environment, Ecology and Forests, Madagascar, University of Antananarivo, Madagascar and Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IGSNRR/CAS).
