The celebration online meeting of 2021 WSIS (World Summit on Information Society) Prize was held on May 18. The project on COVID-19 Data and Knowledge Hub, jointly supported by China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) and Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IGSNRR/CAS) was awarded 2021 WSIS Prize (e-Science, Champion). The WSIS was held in Geneva in 2003 and Tunis in 2005 organized by the United Nations. The Summit is a global multi-stakeholder exchange platform to promote the sustainable development of the global information society, jointly organized by the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations (UNDESA), the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The WSIS Prize has been awarded since 2012, which reco­ gnizes successful projects and cases of the use of information and communication technologies for sustainable development. WSIS Prize has 18 categories, covering areas such as infor­mation and communication infr­astructure, information access and capacity building. There are 18 Winers and 72 Champions among 1,270 projects submitted from 89 countries in the world in 2021.

On 31 January 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia Outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). The Consultant Committee on Information and Communication Technology for the United Nations (CCIT) and the Consultant Committee on Life Sciences and Human Health (CCLH) for the United Nations of China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), jointly launched the project on COVID-19 Knowledge and Data Hub as the quick respond to PHEIC. The project team is consists of three sub-groups. The steering group is led by Prof. Gong, K., Chairman of CCIT with members includes Prof. Liang, X. F., CCLH secretary-general, and Prof. Liu, C., CCIT member and Prof. of IGSNRR/CAS. The content group is let by Prof. Liang, X. F. and Mrs. Yi, H. Y., Chief of CCLH Secretariat. The technical group is led by Prof. Liu, C. for the operational daily services on COVID-19 Knowledge and Data Hub, integrating to the services of Global Change Research Data Publishing & Repository (GCdataPR).

More than hundred of contributors jointed the project, they were from Chinese Preventive Medicine Association, Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College (CAMS & PUMC), Tsinghua Changgeng Hospital, Beijing Ditan Hospital, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, Chinese Medical Journal Network, the Institute of Medical Information (IMI) & Library, National Science Library/Chinese Academy of Sciences, Institute of Microbiology/ Chinese Academy of Sciences, Institute of Geographic Science and Natural Resources Research/Chinese Academy of Sciences, The Geographical Society of China (GSC), Nankai University, Liaoning Normal University, Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture, Institute of Atmospheric Physics/Chinese Academy of Sciences, Fujian Normal University, etc.

The COVID-19 Knowledge and Data Hub was launched on 5 February 2020 for internal test in both Chinese and English. It was openly available to all in earlier of March 2020. In September of the same year, the project outcome was on display on the exhibition of the World Information Summit Forum (WSIS). With big data, artificial intelligence and related digital technologies, the Hub has encouraged more than 170 scientific and technological journals to participate in the construction of the WHO??s COVID-19 database, and timely display the research results of China??s scientific and technological community. By May 2021, there were 1,313 epidemic reports and 276,868 academic articles and 876 datasets at the Hub services. Visitors were from 97 countries of the world.

China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) was granted Special Consultative Status by the United Nations Economic and Social Council in July 2004. By giving full play to the advantages of the China science and technology community, CAST gathers the wisdom and strength of it with the Special Consultative Status to United Nations serves as a working platform, to deeply participate in global science and technology governance, contribute Chinese wisdom, and strive to build the Community with a shared future for mankind. The Global Change Research Data Publishing & Repository (GCdataPR) was launched online in June 2014. It is the full member of World Data System (WDS) of the International Science Council (ISC). It is committed to sharing scientific data with the whole society to promote environmental protection and sustainable development. It was award the 2018 WSIS Prize (e-Science, Champion).
