Wheat-Maize Double Cropping Field in Yellow River Irrigation Fangsi Town Case on Environment Protection and Sustainable Development (Case 9)

DOI:10.3974/geodc.2021.12.09,CSTR:20146.22.2021.12.09,GCdataPR [2021]09

The case is led by Professor Wang Zhenbo from Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and launched by a team jointly composed of Institute of Wheat Research of Dezhou Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Yucheng People’s Govement, Yucheng Fangsi People’s Govement,Yucheng Maixiangyuan Food Co.,Ltd.,Beijing Tianhang Create Co.,Ltd. The case has been listed as a case of the "Geographical Indications Environment & Sustainability " (Case 9).

Yucheng has a long history. From 1046 BC to 771 BC (Western Zhou Dynasty), "Zhuguo" was established. In 221 BC, Emperor Qin Shi Huang established Zhuke County. In 742 BC (Tianbao Year of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang Dynasty), it was renamed Yucheng. Yucheng is located in a slope depression between the Yellow River and its floodplain sediments. Yucheng was a place where the Da Yu achieved great success in controlling floods and guiding rivers into the sea.

Fangsi Town in Yucheng City is located in the northwest of Shandong Province, with a golden latitude of 37 degrees north latitude. It belongs to a typical warm temperate semi humid continental monsoon climate zone. Abundant light and heat resources, combined with rain and heat, are conducive to the improvement of wheat grain protein and the accumulation of corn starch. The case area belongs to the Yellow River alluvial plain in northwest Shandong, with a flat terrain and deep soil layer, making it easy to cultivate. The soil is pollution-free and rich in nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. At the same time, the case area is located in the Yellow River irrigation area, with sufficient water for wheat irrigation and excellent water environment quality, meeting the national first-class standard.

Yucheng is one of the main production areas of high-quality wheat and corn in China, with a long history of agricultural production. The dual cropping of winter wheat, summer corn, and wheat is its unique agricultural planting mode. The dominant wheat varieties in the case area are Jimai 44 and Shiluan 02-1, and the dominant corn varieties are Denghai 605. These varieties have outstanding advantages such as high quality, disease resistance, and high yield. A region of land nurtures a region of wheat. The wheat grains in Yucheng are plump, with a thin epidermis and high protein content. They are rich in minerals, calcium, iron, and various vitamins, and their quality is higher than the national level of strong gluten wheat. The corn here has a high starch content and is rich in arginine, and its quality also exceeds the national first-class standard.

In the early 1980s, in order to solve the problems of drought, flood, salinity, and alkalinity in the Huanghuaihai Plain, the Yucheng Comprehensive Experimental Station of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was established. With the support of technology, Yucheng has promoted the integrated cultivation and protection model of ditch forest road field for basic farmland in the Yellow River, Huai River, and Hai River, which is resistant to waterlogging, salinization, and sandstorms. This not only manages saline alkali land, but also achieves the transformation from barren land to a demonstration area of "one ton and a half grain".

Fangsi Town adopts a standardized planting management model to achieve good fields, seeds, methods, opportunities, and supporting systems. In terms of business management, the local government supports the development of small and micro enterprises, relying on the municipal enterprise Yucheng Difengyuan Agricultural Investment Co., Ltd. to lead wheat processing enterprises, forming a "research institute+town +enterprise+cooperative+agricultural service center" grain industry chain, achieving one piece of land and three types of income (contracted land, dividends, and working), improving grain quality and brand value, and increasing the income of planting farmers. In 2021, planting farmers increased their income by more than 300 yuan per mu, and the total annual income of the town increased by 240 million yuan.

In 2021, Fangsi Town in Yucheng set up a basic farmland ground monitoring system to conduct all-weather monitoring and data collection of visible landscapes, meteorology, air, soil, water quality, diseases and pests in the case area, and established a traceability system for the growth environment and entire growth process of wheat grains. The international registration of this case, the registration of the China Science and Technology Resource Sharing System, and the monitoring and traceability system have all been registered in accordance with national standards.

"Geographical Indications Environment & Sustainability " is led by the Chinese Geographical Society, incorporated into the action plan of the " Innovation China" professional science and technology service team of the China Association for Science and Technology. Its purpose is to integrate basic sciences such as geography, resources, and ecology, as well as information and communication technologies such as geographic information systems, remote sensing and Earth observation, big data and the Internet of Things, with open science as the basic principle, to protect geographical indications, to promote rural revitalization and regional sustainable development.
