The lake is higher in the southeast and lower in the northwest, which is formed by the continental rift between Kunlun Mountains and Hoh Xili Mountains. The lake shore is winding around, with many peninsulas, splits, and heads. The area of Hoh Xil Lake is 350.85 km², and its shoreline is 244.12 km. There are 19 islands in the lake.
