Dataset of Oil Palm Plantation Area in Southeast Asia Based on Combined Time-series Optical and Microwave Remote Sensing (2019-2021)

Abstract:
Oil palm is a significant tropical oil crop with considerable economic advantages and market value. The dataset of oil palm plantation area in southeast Asia based on combined time-series optical and microwave remote sensing (2019-2021) was developed based on Sentinel-1/2, combined with SRTM DEM, coastline, global oil palm sample set, time series NDVI maximum optical data, microwave texture features, other auxiliary data and the random forest classification method. In the dataset, the pixel value identified as oil palm in one to three seasons is 1, and the pixel value identified as oil palm in all four seasons is 2. The area assigned to 1 or 2 is denoted as the union of the seasons, and the area assigned to 2 is denoted as the intersection of the seasons in statistics. The spatial resolution of the dataset is 0.00014489° (about 16 m). The overall accuracy of intersection is 96.72%, and the omission error is only 0.34%. The overall accuracy of the union is 93.72%, and the commission error is only 0.4%. Compared to other published oil palm datasets about area of oil palm, the result from union in this dataset is the closest to those from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The dataset is archived in .tif format, and consists of 27 data files with data size of 3.43 GB (Compressed to 3 files with 713 MB).
