Abstract:
Based on the China Agricultural Production Costs and Returns Compilation and the time series land ecosystem classification dataset of China in five-year increments (1990-2010), the characteristics of farmland marginalization were analyzed under the context of the rapid rise in agricultural labor prices, and the dataset of farmland marginalization characteristics in mountainous areas of China was developed. The data result shows that since 2000, with the increase of agricultural opportunity cost and the constraint of rough terrains, the proportion of agricultural labor cost in mountainous areas of China has risen markedly, and the agricultural productivity of mountainous areas has been increased slowly in comparison with the plain area, resulting in the profit of agricultural production fell below zero in 2013. The dataset includes: (1) Boundary data of the study area (mountainous counties). (2) Economic characteristics data of farmland marginalization: a. Proportion of agricultural labor costs between mountainous and plain in 2003 and 2013. b. Average labor productivity in maize cultivation between mountainous and plain provinces in China from 1995 to 2013. c. Profits of maize cultivation between mountainous and plain in China from 2004 to 2013. (3) Land use changes in Chinese mountainous counties (10km x 10km): a. Farmland changes from 1990 to 2000. b. Farmland changes from 2000 to 2010. c. Forest land changes from 1990 to 2000. d. Forest land changes from 2000 to 2010. The data was archived in .shp, .xlsx data format with data size of 34.8 MB (compressed to one data file with data size of 4.74 MB). The analysis paper related to the dataset was published at the journal of Acta Geographica Sinica, Vol. 73, No. 5, 2018.
