East China Sea Coastline Changes Dataset in Five-Year Increments (1990-2015)

Abstract:
The continental coastline of East China Sea is between 23°37′N~31°46′N and 117°11E′~122°08′E. It starts from Qidongzui in the Yangtze River Estuary in the north and reaches Tielu Port in the southern most of Fujian Province, adjacent to Guangdong Province. It spans 8 latitudes from north to south and is subordinated to Shanghai City, Zhejiang and Fujian Provinces. Based on Landsat TM/OLI image (with a spatial resolution of 30 m), the image interpretation and band edge detection were used to determine and correct the position of the coastline, and the spatial and temporal distribution data of the continental coastline of the East China Sea from 1990 to 2015 was developed. With reference to the type of national coastal basic function planning, and according to the natural state of the coastline and the way of human utilization, the coastline was divided into two categories: natural coastline and artificial coastline. The natural coastline was divided into bedrock coastline, gravel coastline, muddy coastline and estuarine Coastline. The artificial coastline was divided into breeding coastline, port wharf coastline, construction coastline and protective coastline. Using the correlation models of coastline utilization intensity and coastline fractal dimension in different years, the data including coastline intensity and fractal dimension was calculated to obtain the East China Sea coastline changes dataset in five-year increments (1990-2015). The result shows that the total length of the continental coastline of the East China Sea is 4,720.74 km in 2015. From 1990 to 2015, the proportion of length of natural coastline to total length of coastline decreased from 68.06% to 46.12%; while the proportion of artificial coastline to total coastline increased from 31.94% to 53.88%. The dataset includes the following data for the East China Sea from 1990 to 2015: (1) 5-year interval continental coastline and its type spatial distribution data (.shp); (2) Type structure data of the continental coastal lines (.xlsx) (3) The fractal dimension of coastlines in each province (municipality) of the East China Sea (.xlsx); (4) Utilization intensity index of the coastline (.xlsx). The dataset is archived in .shp and .xlsx data format, and consists of 43 data files with data size of 3.68 MB (Compressed to 1.70 MB in one file).
