Abstract:

Based on DMSP/OLS stable nighttime light images, we used the invariant target method to calibrate these images in the Taihu Lake Basin (TLB). Referring to the concept of land use degree, we put forward the index of urban development level (UDL), and validated the index of urban development level using four indicators: the gross domestic product, the non-agricultural population, the area of built-up areas and the proportion of non-agricultural population. Then, we analyzed the trend of urban development in TLB from 2000 to 2010. The results show that the UDL index based on night light data can reflect the characteristics of urban development, such as economic level, urban boundary expansion, the proportion of non-agricultural population, and effectively characterize the phenomenon of urban expansion. The dataset consist of yearly UDL data in the TLB from 2000 to 2010. The spatial resolution is 1 km. The dataset is archived in .tif format with data size of 6.21 MB (compressed to one single file with data size of 313 KB). The analysis paper based on this dataset was published at Acta Ecologica Sinica, Vol. 38, No. 16, 2018.
