Abstract：

South Island is located in the western of the South Pacific Ocean and in the southern of New Zealand. It extends from northeast to southwest and is the larger island of the two principal islands in New Zealand. South Island is separated 25.80 km from North Island by Cook Strait at its north, 26.90 km from Stewart Island by Foveaux Strait at its south. The geo-location of the South Island is between 40°29′52″S and 46°40′32″S, 166°25′31″E and 174°19′3″E. The total area of the South Island is 150396.62 km² (Albers Projection) and the total coastline is 6770.59 km (Lambert Projection). The South Island is mainly mountainous, and the South Alps on the west coast of the South Island are the largest mountain areas in New Zealand. On the east coast, there is a long and narrow plain, which is the most important farming and pastoral area of New Zealand. The South Island has a series of glacial lakes and glaciers with the lowest altitude. Christchurch and Dunedin are two famous cities in the South Island. The dataset was developed based on the Google Earth and related maps and references. The dataset is consisted of 26 data files and archived in the .kmz and .shp data formats with data size of 21.5 MB (Compressed to 14.7 MB in three files).
