Abstract:

The Tarim River is the largest inland river in China. In a broad sense, the Tarim River Basin refers to the entire catchment area of the Tarim River and its tributaries, including the Aksu River, Kashgar River, and Yarkand River, encompassing key agricultural and ecological regions. It plays a crucial role in Xinjiang’s water resources, agricultural irrigation, ecological conservation, and human livelihoods. In this study, 30-m resolution ASTER GDEM elevation data were used. The data were first mosaicked, clipped, and pre-processed in ArcGIS Pro. Hydrological analysis—such as sink filling, flow direction, flow accumulation, and river network extraction—was then conducted to delineate the preliminary extent of the Tarim River Basin. Finally, high-resolution satellite imagery in 2015, combined with terrain and elevation information, was visually interpreted to produce an accurate basin boundary. According to the results, the Tarim River Basin is located between 34°50′40″N and 43°21′0″N, 73°2′59″E and 98°59′10″E, covering an area of 1,063,464.45 km² (Albers) and has a perimeter of 8,764.71 km (Lambert). This dataset is archived in .kmz and .shp data formats, and consists of 17 data files with data size of 218 MB (Compressed into 2 files with 86 MB).
