Rural Energy Poverty and its Factors Dataset of China (2000-2015)

Abstract:

The energy poverty (EP) refers to the lack of access to electricity and clean fuels and the lack of access to modern energy services. The energy poverty index (EPI) is an index calculated by weighted summation method which considers the core index of energy poverty. The EPI factors include per capita domestic electricity consumption, per capita liquefied petroleum gas, per capita total gas output of biogas digester, per capita coverage of solar water heaters and solar rooms, and the penetration rate of clean cookers (number of kitchen ventilator per 100 households, and solar cookers per 100 households). The Theil Index is the degree of regional difference in rural energy poverty in China. The higher the Theil Index is, the greater the regional differences. Based on the China statistical yearbook, China energy statistical yearbook, China rural energy yearbook and China rural statistical yearbook, data of 26 items related to the rural energy poverty including per capita GDP, education level of rural labor, rural power supply were collected and calculated using weighted summation method to develop the rural energy poverty index of each province in China (No data available in Tibet, Hongkong, Macao and Taiwan). The regional differences of rural energy poverty in the eastern, central and western China were obtained by Theil index. Then the dataset of rural energy poverty index and influencing factors were developed. The result shows that the rural energy poverty had an "inverse U" trend from 2000 to 2015, that is to say, it increased first and then decreased. The regional disparity of rural energy poverty presented a narrowing trend with big fluctuation. The dataset includes 1) the rural energy poverty index in each province of China during 2000-2015; 2) the rural energy poverty index in eastern, central and western China during 2000-2015; 3) the regional difference of the rural energy poverty in China during 2000-2015; 4) yearly indexes related to rural energy poverty in each province of China from 2000 to 2015. The dataset is archived in .xlsx data format, and it is consist of one data file with data size of 153 KB. The analysis paper based on the dataset was published in Geographical Research, Vol.37, No.6, 2018.
