Abstract:

The Himalayas are one of the most extensive glacier regions and one of the most sensitive regions to climate change in the world. One indicator of climate change in this region is in the glacial lake changes. Monitoring the changes of three glacial lakes in the Himalayas will help us to understanding how the glacier and glacier lakes integrate, given the climate change background. The three glacier lakes are Imja Lake (Nepal),Karda Lake (China) and Rongbuk Lake (China) at the foot of Mt. Everest. We developed the time-series dataset of glacier lakes changes from 1978-2014 based on the remote sensing and DEM analysis and in-situ surveying. The dataset is archived in Arc/GIS .shp format and Google Earth .kmz format. The attributes of the dataset include time period, name, area, sensor, and location. The dataset indicates that there was no water body in Rongbuk in 1976, while the area of water body in 2014 was 580,239 m2. The area of Karda lake expanded from 389317 m2 to 809388 m2 and Imja lake from 284,411m2 to 1,260,218 m2 during the same time peried. Besides, the two files recording field surveying information on Imja Lake in 2008 and Rongbuk Lake in 2012 are included.Browse
