Abstract:

Dr. Fridtjof Wedel-Jarlsberg Nansen(1861.10.10 - 1930.05.13)was one of the well-known Norwegian polar experts and geographers. He was the first one who crossed Greenland, the first man who discovered that the Arctic region was covered by water; and his successful Arctic explorations in the period 1893-1896 amazed Norway and the whole world. Not only was he also a great diplomat and social activist, but he was a Nobel Peace Prize winner as well. Mr. Roald Amundsen (1872-1928) dedicated his whole life to polar explorations. He reached the geographical south pole in 1911, thereby marking a new milestone in the human history of polar exploration. Mr. Otto Neumann Knoph Sverdrup(1854.10.31 - 1930.11.26)was also one of the polar experts. He was one of the designers and the captain of the “Fram”, which was a famous polar exploration ship. In remembering all three of them, more than 20 countries issued postage stamps. The Lin Chao Geomuseum collected 340 stamps issued since 1893 by Norway, Germany, Canada, Holland, Greenland, the Soviet Union, Australia, Romania, Monaco, Cook Islands, Armenia, North Korea, the United Kingdom, Sao Tome and Principe, Chad, Mali, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Croatia, Mozambique, Guinea, Madagascar, and China. The collection includes stamps, covers and postcards, and they all are archived in the Digital Lin Chao Geomuseum at http://www.geomuseum.cn. The museum is operated by the Geographical Society of China, in cooperation with the International Geographical Union (IGU) and the international Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA), an interdisciplinary committee of the International Council of Sciences (ICSU).Browse
