Abstract:
The Great Mekong Subregion (GMS) is a program of subregional economic cooperation, initialed by the Asia Development Bank (ADB) in 1992, aiming at enhancing economic cooperation among the countries. The GMS covers the areas of the six countries including the People's Republic of China (PRC, specifically Yunnan Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region), Lao People's Democratic Republic, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodian and Viet Nam. The GMS connected with Tibet, Sichuan, Guizhou and Hunan Provinces of China in north, Gangdong Province of China and South China Sea in east, Malaysia in south and Indian and Bangladesh and Andaman Sea in west. The boundary data of GMS become the fundamental dataset for the digital studies in GMS. The GMSBND updated to 2015 was integrated and developed based on the very high resolution images from the Digital Earth in one meter of Digital Globe mostly and a few from Spot and Landsat images, besides, a series of maps has been referenced also. The results from the dataset indicate: (1) the boundary of the GMS is 6.72×104 km long, in which, land boundary is 7731km, 11.50% of total boundary, the coast line is 5.95×104km long, 88.50% of total boundary. There are 6186 islands in GMS (no less than 15m2 in area), coast line of the islands is 3.63×104km long, which is 61.06% of total coast line of the GMS region. (2) The total area of GMS is 253.94×104km2,in which, continental area is 249.40×104km2, and islands area is 4.54×104 km2.
