Abstract:

Information on 13185 archaeological sites, including place-based descriptions and corresponding cultures, was extracted from the Atlas of Chinese Cultural Relics. These sites are located in northern China (29.4°N-53.3°N, 92.3°E-126.1°E), spanning 3 regions and 12 representative prehistoric cultures. Geographic coordinates were retrieved by geo-coding place-based descriptions through the Gaode (Amap) Maps Web API. To ensure data accuracy, bias caused by place name ambiguity or administrative boundary changes were manually verified and corrected. Following these pre-processing steps, we constructed the Dataset of Human Activity in Northern China during the Neolithic Period, with a spatial resolution of 0.5° × 0.5°. The dataset has 3 core dimensions: culture, longitude (lon), and latitude (lat). It also provides 4 variables: site density (density), observed nearest neighbor index (NNI_obs), standardized nearest neighbor index (Z), and statistical significance level (p_value). A value of 5555555555 indicates that only one site is present within the corresponding grid cell. The dataset is archived in NetCDF format (*.nc), and consists of one single file with data size of 1.20 MB.
