Abstract:
Socotra Island, also called Sokotra Island, is located in the western of the Indian Ocean, at the junction of the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Aden. It is 351 km separated from the Arabian Peninsula in Asia, 233 km from the Somali Peninsula in Africa. It is the key route from the Indian Ocean to the Red Sea and East Africa. Socotra Island is in Socotra province, Republic of Yemen. Its geo-location is 12°18′5″N - 12°42′47″N, 53°18′19″E - 54°32′3″E,. The area of the Socotra Island is 3591.14 km² and the coastline is 359.88 km long. Due to the long-term isolation of the Socotra Island from the continental plate, there are many unique animals and plants on the island. The Socotra is the main island of the Socotra archipelago. The archipelago was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2008. The dataset of the Socotra Island was developed based on the Google Earth satellite images and related maps. The dataset is archived in .kmz and .shp data formats, consists of 17 data files with data size of 1.91 MB (compressed to two data files with 1.34 MB).
