Abstract:

During the Ming and Qing dynasties of China, groups of scholars, officials and intellectuals frequently traveled along the Grand Canal and its adjacent transportation routes, leaving behind a substantial number of travel diaries and journals. These records provide detail information about the spatial-temporal behaviors of the authors during their journeys, offering significant insights into the spatial and temporal characteristics of scholars' travel behaviors and the overall cultural landscape of the Grand Canal during this period. The 135 travel texts were collected, from which 90 texts, representing 118 individual journeys, were selected based on the completeness and detail of their recorded information. The spatial-temporal dataset includes: (1) basic information on the travel itineraries along the Grand Canal during the Ming and Qing dynasties, such as the travelers' identities, titles of travel diaries, travel purposes, as well as starting and ending points and dates; (2) spatial-temporal behavior data, which covers the specific time and locations of each itinerary, the mode of travel (by water or land), duration of stay, travel activities (for business, sightseeing, or socializing), as well as information on the frequency of travel, number of passes, and stay time for each location. The dataset is archived in .xlsx and .shp data formats, and consists of 8 data files with data size of 725 KB (Compressed to one file with 478 KB). The analysis article based on this dataset has been accepted to be published in Acta Geographica Sinica, Vol. 79, 2024.
