Abstract:
    Leaf area index (LAI), defined as one sided green leaf area per unit ground area in broadleaf canopies and as the projected needle leaf area in coniferous canopies, is a critical structural variable for quantifying the interaction between the land surface and atmosphere. The 1 km/5-day leaf area index product over China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was generated using multiple datasets, including Terra/MODIS, Aqua/MODIS, NOAA18/AVHRR, FY3A/VIRR, FY3B/VIRR, FY-3A/MERSI, and FY-3B/MERSI. The proposed multi-sensor fusion algorithm comprises of a set of Neural Networks tailored to various combinations of data quality, DEM, and land covers. The quality of LAI product was assessed based on model simulations, in-situ LAI measurements conducted in the upper and middle reaches of the Heihe River Basin in China, and the inter-comparisons against other LAI products (MODIS, GEOV1 and GLASS). Results show that the produced LAI have a higher accuracy and improved spatiotemporal continuity. The product is produced and distributed in 40 adjacent non-overlapping Sinusoidal tiles that are approximately 10°x10° (at the equator). The data format is *.tif which is compressed into 19 zip files totaling 5.17 GB. The data type is 16-bit signed integer, the scale factor is 0.01, and the unit is m2/m2.
