Abstract:
Madagascar Island is located at the western Indian Ocean, its geolocation is between latitude 11°56′59″S - 25°36′25″S and longitude 43°11′18″E - 50°29′36″E, 415 km off the eastern coast of Mozambique. Its neighbor islands include the Comoros Islands in Northwest, Seychelles Islands in north and the island of Mauritius and Reunion Island in east. Based on the Google Earth images in 2015, the boundary data of the Madagascar Island was developed. The total area of the Madagascar islands is 591,128.68 km2, in which, the major island is 589,015.06 km2, and the nearby islands such as 2,113.62 km2. The Madagascar Island is the biggest island in African and the forth one in the world, following the Greenland, New Guinea, and Kalimantan Islands. The island is in north-south spindle-shaped; 1572 km long from north to south and 574 km width in maximum from west to east. The total coastline is 16,309.27 km long, in which, the biggest Island is 10,899.03 km long and the nearby small islands is 5,410.24 km. The Republic of Madagascar is subdivided into 22 regions (faritra), and further subdivided into 119 districts. The regions include Diana, Sava, Itasy, Analamanga, Vakinankaratra, Bongolava, Sofia, Boeny, Betsiboka, Melaky, Alaotra Mangoro, Atsinanana, Analanjirofo, Amoron'i Mania, Haute-Matsiatra, Vatovavy-Fitovinany, Atsimo-Atsinanana, Ihorombe, Menabe, Atsimo-Andrefana, Androy and Anosy regions. The capital of the country is the city of Antananarivo, located at the mid-east of the island. The Madagascar Island is full of volcano and Karst landforms; the peak of the Tsaratanana Massif is Maromokotro at 2,876 m. Because of the combination of southeastern trade winds and northwestern monsoons produces a hot rainy season (November–April) and a relatively cooler dry season (May–October). The rain forest and tropical savanna are more popular in the island, although semi-arid and desert ecosystems in the southwest. There are more than 200,000 species of fauna and flora in the island, including Lemur catta habited in Madagascar only and Adansonia digitata L. as the national tree.
