Abstract:
The dataset of famine in Jiangsu-Shanghai region during Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) was developed based on historical records and related documentations. The famine records, including the time, location, degree and causes of famines have been collected in Jiangsu and Shanghai during 1644-1911. Then, two annual sequences of famines (frequency of counties affected by famine and its weighted index) were reconstructed by using the semantic differential method and weighted index. The famine indexes were further used to quantitatively explore the spatial variations of the famines, including different factors causing disasters during the Qing Dynasty. The dataset includes: (1) the famine sequence data, including annual records of famine in each level and annual temporal data of total famine in counties and famine index; (2) Famine index data in each county; (3) famine index data of different causing factors (flood, drought, wind and tide, freezing and insect disasters). The dataset is archived in .xlsx data format, and consists of one data file with data size of 24.9 KB. The analysis paper based on the dataset was published at Progress in Geography, Vol. 39, No. 8, 2020.
