Abstract:
The geographical names of 92 islands, reefs, sands and beaches from six maps published from 1940s to 1950s were collected. These maps include Map of East Indies; Location Map of the South China Sea Islands published by Ministry of the Interior in 1948, Location Map of the South China Sea Islands in A Brief Account of the Geography of the South China Sea Islands in1947, Map of the Administrative Districts of the Republic of China in 1948, Map of Hainan Island and the South China Sea Islands in New Chinese Provincial Maps in 1948, Map of the South China Sea Islands of China in New Map of the People's Republic of China in 1950. Besides, the Geographical Names for Part of Nanhai Zhudao (South China Sea Islands), which were published in April 1983, were also listed at the dataset. Based on the geographical names from the six historical maps, it is confirmed that the South China Sea on the Map of East Indies is consistent with Location Map of the South China Sea Islands, and Map of the Administrative Districts of the Republic of China, which were published in 1947–1948. The dataset is archived in .xlsx data format, and consists of one single data file with data size of 16.7 KB. The analysis paper based on the dataset was published at Chinese Science Bulletin, Vol. 64, No. 23, 2019.Browse
