Abstract:
Based on the 12-month scale standard precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) at December of each year, 5 levels of global drought from 1981-2014 were identified. They are: SPEI>-0.5 no drought; -1.0<SPEI≤-0.5 light drought, -1.5<SPEI≤-1.0moderate drought, -2.0<SPEI≤-1.5 severe drought,SPEI≤-2.0 very severe drought. The Global Drought Classification Dataset(1981–2014)is consisted of the following data files: (1) Yearly spatial data of global drought classification from 1981 to 2014. (2) Yearly proportion of Global Drought classification from 1981 to 2014 based on the 12-month scale SPEI. The data results show that the global light and moderate drought areas decreased from 1981 to 2014; however, as for the areas of severe and very severe drought, there was a downward trend before 2004 and an upward trend since 2004. The dataset is archived in .tif and .xlsx format. The temporal resolution is 1 year and the spatial resolution is 0.5°X 0.5°. The data size is 33.6MB (563KB in compressed file).
