In the Mu Us Sandy Land of northern China (39°25′N-39°29′N, 108°37′E-108°44′E), 16 soil profiles with depths ranging from 5.5 m to 9.0 m were drilled under different land covers were developed from 2016-2017. Measurements included soil water content, Cl- concentration of soil water and estimated chloride cumulative age. Meanwhile, shallow groundwater (including 5 samples at water table) from 23 wells was sampled for water temperature (T), water chemistry (pH, TDS, Na, K, Ca2 , Mg2 , F-、Cl-, NO3-, SO42-, HCO3-), stable isotopes(δ18O和δ2H) and radioisotope (3H) analyses. These data compose the in Situ Index dataset of soil profiles and groundwater in the Mu Us Sandy Land (2016-2017). The dataset includes: (1) vector data of soil and groundwater sampling sites; (2) the description of soil profiles (Tab. 1); (3) the gravimetric moisture content, chloride concentration of soil water, and chloride cumulative age for the soil profiles (Tab. 2); (4) the water temperature, chemical and isotopic compositions for the shallow groundwater (including 5 samples at water table, Tab. 3). The dataset is archived in .xlsx, .kmz, and .shp data formats in 17 file, with the data size of 47.5 KB (compressed to 36.7 KB in four files). The research results related to the dataset have been published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Vol. 125, Issue 9, 2020.
