Abstract:

A new algorithm was developed for identifying mangrove forest by integrating remote sensing images and the frequency features of evergreenness, dense canopy, and inundation, as well as elevation, slope, and the rule of intersection with sea. Based on 1941 Landsat ETM /OLI images (acquired between January 1, 2014 and July, 2016, 25 WRS-2 Path/Row), 586 Sentinel-1A C band SAR images, and the new algorithm, the mangrove forest distribution in China (2015) was developed. The dataset is at 30m spatial resolution. In statistics, there are 20,303 hm² of mangrove forest in 2015 (Not including open canopy of planted mangrove forest), and 92% of them were distributed in Hainan, Guangxi, and Guangdong province. Among them, Guangdong province has the largest mangrove forest area (8136 hm²), then followed by Guangxi and Hainan, with an area of 6849 hm² and 3667 hm² separately. The mangrove forest area in Fujian, Taiwan, and Hong Kong were around 500 hm² in each, and very few mangrove forests were found in Zhejiang and Macao. The dataset consist of directly classified data (MangroveChina2015_DC) and the corrected data (MangroveChina2015_DC_Correction). The dataset is archived in .shp and .kmz data format, with the compressed data size of 2.67MB.
